Patients with the lowest fiber intake is 30 percent less likely to develop diverticulosis as men who have the highest intake. The results of these studies have been published in the journal Gastroenterology February 2012 issue.
“The study also showed that constipation is not a risk factor. The study participants who had more than 15 bowel movements per week were 70 percent more likely to develop diverticulosis than those with less than 7 bowel movements per week,” said the researchers as reported from HealthMonitor, Wednesday (02/08/2012).
The researchers in the study found an association between fiber intake, bowel movements, and the risk of diverticulosis does not prove causality. In addition, no association was seen between diverticulosis and lack of physical activity or intake of red meat or fat.
“The results are quite interesting for researchers,” said Dr. Anne Peery of the division of gastroenterology and hepatology.
Diverticulosis affects about a third of adults in the United States over the age of 60 years. Most cases do not cause symptoms, but the condition can cause complications such as bleeding, infection, bowel perforation and even death.
People with diverticulosis often have no symptoms, but they may have bloating and cramping in the lower abdomen.
